Sleep
Solution For Crib Climbing

For those of you with adventurous crib climbers, I may have the answer to getting a good night’s sleep again. My son, now 28 months, begun climbing out of his crib about 5 months ago. At first we were amused at his abilities, to the point that we videotaped him maneuvering his way down, very smoothly, and sent it via email to friends and family. They all got a kick out of it, as did we, until the reality kicked it: this would be the end of our peaceful night’s sleep, that was, unless we did something about it.

We first tried to transfer him into his new ‘big boy bed’. We took the front off his crib, making it into a toddler bed, and even went out and bought a little railing to put on the side for him not to roll out in his sleep. This was great, we thought, until the first night we tried it. After leaving him to put himself to sleep, we had to tuck him back in several times as he would keep coming out, and looking for us. Finally, we closed his door, leaving him in his bed and telling him to go back to bed, through the door, when he’d knock on it. After what seemed to have been endless knocking and calling for us, it got quiet. I then went to check on him, only to notice there was something blocking his door from opening- him with his pillow. The poor boy had fallen asleep at his door; needless to say I felt like a horrible mother.

The next morning, I knew we had to put him back in his crib; there had to be some way to keep him from climbing out. So I researched, and researched, and found many parents having the same problem, and recommending the same solution: a crib tent. That same day, we got our very own tent, and it turned out to be even better than expected. The price seemed a bit steep to pay for some mesh and rods, but it was after all, going to give us back our peaceful nights. Now looking back, I would have gladly paid twice the money for the results it gave us.

Cozy Crib Tent II

Our son loves his tent, and often times helps me zip it up, and we give kissed through it, which makes him laugh. It is like his very own cozy little nest, and I think it calms him and makes him feel safe to have the netting over the crib. This was surely our best purchase, one that I would not want to live without. We are expecting our second baby in a few months, and will buy another crib for her, just to keep our little guy in his for as long as he fits in it. I joke and say we won’t take him out, until it begins interfering with his growth, but hope that he will fit in it for a long time to come.

I recommend for all of you with similar issues, to get one without hesitation, and to those with kids nearing two years, to get one, just to avoid the climbing out, even if it hasn’t yet happened. We were lucky that our boy didn’t get hurt coming down, but not all kids are, I have heard on more than one occasion of kids hurting themselves, dropping down from their cribs.

Good luck, and sweet dreams!
